Barcamps: Popular meeting places for the Internet scene
The Corona pandemic in particular resulted in another disruptive surge in digitization. Whether in authorities, companies, schools or universities, face-to-face events were replaced and displaced in favor of online events everywhere. On the one hand, this was in line with the general trend. In the meantime, however, it has become apparent that the complete shutdown of face-to-face encounters and events has become increasingly difficult to bear for many.
It was precisely this renewed appreciation of face-to-face encounters and events that helped the Internet scene to invent an event format almost 20 years ago that optimally satisfied this need: barcamps. This renovation can be made plausible with research on social movements. And if we can expect to return to pre- or post-pandemic normality from 2022 onwards, then the demand for barcamps will also pick up again.
The Barcamp Movement
Barcamps, a highly interactive event format, have been held in Germany since 2006. In a way, they symbolize a cultural breakthrough, and in terms of their supporters and fans, this series of events can be described like a social movement.

Barcamps and public sociology: a meaningful symbiosis?
Public Sociology aims to share sociological research and findings with the public. For this purpose, barcamps can be of particular mediating value, because they are very low-threshold in terms of inclusion and because they raise proactive participation of all interested parties to a principle — ideal conditions for implementing public sociology interactively and practically.
Insights on Barcamps – Empirical Research Results on a Still Young Event Form
Barcamps have existed in Germany since 2006, and hundreds, perhaps thousands, have now been held. Yet the state of knowledge about who participates in barcamps, why and how often, is generally insufficient. The present study was one of the first surveys to collect and preliminarily evaluate initial data as part of an evaluation.
Sustainability through participation? A special feature of Barcamps
Barcamps, a highly inclusive, interactive event format, achieve their efficiency and effectiveness primarily through their procedures. By actively involving all participants in the implementation of barcamps from the very beginning, starting with the personal introduction round to the session pitch to the design of the individual sessions, the responsibility for the success of barcamps is continuously transferred to the participants, thus integrating them in terms of content and emotion. This is what makes barcamps special.
Participation raised to a principle Barcamps: a comparatively new event format
Barcamps, a highly interactive event format, have also experienced high demand in Germany since 2006. In the meantime, there is a wide range of experience with their implementation. Here, a manual is presented on what to look out for if you want to offer and organize one yourself.
